SANDS CUT -- (N25° 29.58 W80° 10.70) is the cut at the extreme North end of Elliot Key, offshore of Bayfront Park boat-ramps in Homestead. This is a bottle-diver's heaven! Mixed together are 1700's blob bottles, 19th century rum bottles, and modern pop-tops in this natural siphon for the entire bay. I don't know what the rules are now, but an additional bonus is all the lobsters, snook, big mangrove, and hog-snappers in the cut. Check the shipwreck section for a map of this area!
CAESAR'S CREEK -- (N25° 23.17 W80° 13.68) is at the South end of Elliot Key, and was the creek used for ships entering the southern passage to the bay. Current is extremely swift, but when conditions permit, it is the same scenario as Sands Cut, above. Quite a few shipwrecks occurred just outside the creek, most are listed in the shipwreck section. Check the shipwreck section for a map of this area!
INDIAN KEY -- (N24° 52.69 W80° 40.65) was the key survivors from the 1733 treasure galleon San Pedro swam to, undoubtedly dropping a fortune in looted riches along the path. Indian Key was also the scene of a large wrecking operation in the 1830's and the site of a massacre in the 2nd Seminole Indian War. Many old blob type bottles etc. have been found by divers around the key. The anchorage where ships were moored was at N24° 52.44 W80° 40.85, or 1/2 mile SW of the key. This site should produce old bottles also. If a line was drawn from the San Pedro to Indian Key, and all the sand pockets received a thorough search, I can't help but believe someone would go home very happy indeed!
TEA TABLE KEY -- (off S. end of Islamorada) -- this was where soldiers were stationed during the 2nd Seminole Indian War in 1836. There must be many artifacts awaiting discovery by snorkeling or diving the sand pockets around this key.
